A note is a vibration repeating at a steady frequency. Double that frequency and you hear the same note one octave higher.

Western melody often begins with seven notes arranged in a precise pattern of whole and half steps: W–W–H–W–W–W–H.

Intervals
An interval measures the distance from one note to another. Small changes in distance create entirely different emotional colours.
